The 36-volt EZ-GO solenoid is the voltage controller for your golf cart. This relay is the main switch that allows full voltage at all amperage levels to pass to your controller or resistor system, depending on the year of your golf cart. For the sake of argument, we'll assume you have the newer model.
There's a whole system of activation switches that work together to make this solenoid click. You have to turn the ignition key to the on position and press the pedal to activate the throttle microswitch. The golf cart must be in transport gear. There's also a reed switch. It's basically a fuse that the charger must disconnect from so the golf cart solenoid can do its job. If all these things don't align, the solenoid won't click. So, just because you don't hear it engage doesn't mean it's bad.
